Great things in CBA - February 2011

  • Chair of Marketing and Management, Tej Adidam, was quoted in a February 2 Omaha World Herald article about the new front-of-package nutrition labels on food.

  • The UNO Investment Club and UNO’s Center for Economics Education were featured in a January 24 Omaha World Herald insert. Mary Lynn Reiser was featured in the article regarding school banks. Ms. Reiser helps coordinate the partnership between schools and banks.

  • Mary Lynn Reiser and Kim Sosin received additional funding from the Kazanjian Foundation for enhancements to their website Econ Ed Reviews. This website lists over 1,200 free economics and personal finance lessons available to K?12 teachers and provides an opportunity for teachers to share written reviews of the materials they use in their classrooms. This web?based resource helps educators find quality materials to enhance economics instruction in a timely manner at no financial cost.

  • CBA held its 13th annual Inside CBA for area high school students interested in studying business. We hosted a record number of students this year representing schools such as Bellevue West, Omaha Bryan, Duchesne, Elkhorn, Gross, Millard North, Millard South, Omaha North, Omaha Northwest, Omaha South, and Skutt. Thanks to Mary Lynn Reiser, Mary Landholt, Jennifer Forbes?Baily, Linda Steensland and Soraya Rahmanzai for your hard work!

  • Two CBA Accounting students, Gilly Niyazova and John Gudenrath, have received Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Scholarship Awards. Each student will receive $500 from IIA.

  • CBA student, Laura Kemp, earned her second consecutive female swimmer of the year award at the Midwestern Collegiate Championships. Laura is pursuing a Banking and Financial Markets major.

  • CBA hosted an Open House on February 26 in conjunction with the UNO Housing Showcase. Over 60 prospective students and parents attended the open house.

  • On February 20, CBA’s Mammel Hall was featured in the Omaha World Herald’s special section for National Engineers Week. An article regarding Mammel Hall’s Grand Award at the ACEC’s 2011 Engineering Excellence Awards dinner was also published in the Midlands Business Journal on February 25.

  • NBDC has been awarded the Small Business Jobs Act Program grant through the Small Business Jobs Act of 2010. This project will provide for expansion of consulting services to meet opportunities for business starts and job growth. Specifically, in this two year program, NBDC will focus on the following unmet needs in Nebraska: increase job creation and business starts by addressing opportunities for technology commercialization, rural business development, and follow?up counseling. The amount of support for the two?year project is $325,000.
