David Yates received his BSBA from UNO in 1985. He became CEO of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium (CMA) seven years ago, at a time when the aquarium was on the verge of insolvency. By creating a vision, a business model and an award-winning management team, he has successfully resturctured the aquarium into a thriving global organization.
When Winter the disabled dolphin came to CMA, Yates had the foresight to see her survival as a story of inspiration. He initiated a global marketing and media plan that attracted the attention of a number of national and international media outlets.
The Clearwater Marine Aquarium’s turnaround took place in the public eye leading up to and through the release of the #1 box office hit, Dolphin Tale, a major motion picture based on Winter's life. The movie, which stars Morgan Freeman, Harry Connick, Jr., Ashley Judd and Kris Kristofferson, has become the top tourism promotion film of all time. The once little-known working animal hospital and its mission of rescue, rehabilitation and release hinged on to two key players, Winter, the tailless dolphin and David Yates, CEO of Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Mr. Yates' vision and leadership are now being recognized on a national level.
