Accounting study at UNO includes emphasis in many areas of accounting to provide individuals with the skills needed for the diverse array of career choices in the accounting field as well as an excellent foundation to pursue CPA certification or other types of certification. Auditing and information systems concentrate on financial and performance audits. Audits of financial statements and internal control have become much more involved since the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.
Understanding information systems is required in order to control them. Financial accounting reports to interested parties outside the organization other than tax authorities. Career paths include financial accountant, controller, and chief financial officer. Management accounting has an integral role in formulating and implementing an organization's strategy.
An integral part of the management team, management accountants work within the organization at many levels and must be able to apply their knowledge and skills in accounting and financial reporting, budgeting, decision support, risk and performance management, internal control, and cost management. Tax accounting is complex and demanding as laws are continuously rewritten and reinterpreted. This field is appropriate for tax specialists in CPA firms, private industry, IRS auditors, and state tax auditors.
