Description of Independent Study Project:

The student shall produce a publishable quality law review article, with the student as lead author and the instructor as second author, and with a 75% - 25% credit spilt. The anticipated topic of the article will be ………... Ideally, the law in question will relate to a paper project in some other academic work the student is completing or has completed.

 

Method of evaluation of project:

10 % exam (based solely on the two assigned texts)

20 % outline and bibliography

30 % first draft

40 % paper (final draft)

 

Timetable for completion of project:

 

1) The final draft is due in CBA 502 no later than ..:00PM on …day, , 1998. This draft must be in the form required by the journal editors' of the student's selected law based upon the editor's replies to the inquiry letters and the evolution of the topic. The final draft may be longer than the first draft, or it may be shorter, according to the needs of the journal(s) to which the final draft will be submitted for publication.

 

2) Frequency of student meetings with academic supervisor.

Meetings will be at least weekly, typically in person, but often by phone. Meetings will be on …day afternoons, at a time and place agreed to at the prior meeting.

 

3) Intermediate deadlines

The Outline and Bibliography are due in CBA 502 no later than …:00 PM on …day, ….., 1998. The Outline shall be at least two double spaced typed pages. The Bibliography shall have at least 50 citations in correct legal form (i.e., "Blue Book" form). The five citations the student expects to be the most important shall be on a separate sheet. The student also shall bring a list of between 3 and 5 law reviews (including photocopies of all submission requirements) that the student believes would be likely publishers of the final draft. The student also shall bring a draft letter of inquiry to be sent to each of the selected law reviews. After approval of the Outline, Bibliography, and letter of inquiry, the letter will be sent to each of the selected law reviews to discover interest and need (if any) to modify the outline.

The first draft is due in CBA 502 no later than …:00 PM on …day, ….., 1998. The first draft shall be between 30 and 60 typed double spaced pages of text, exclusive of end notes, figures, graphs, and bibliography. The typing shall be in 12 point Times font and shall use four one-inch margins. Based on the weekly meetings, it is expected that the first draft and the final draft may evolve away from the approved Outline and topic.

The exam will be administered at a mutually agreeable time between the student and the instructor, but no later than …:00 PM on …day, …. in CBA 502.
