CBA Increases Its Involvement In International Teaching

During Dean Muse's term, the College moved toward teaching and serving in the international arena. Thomas Gouttierre directed the University's international programs and had a government project to provide specialized teaching in Afghanistan. Several faculty from the College were invited to participate. A case study based on the work in Afghanistan was prepared and received national recognition when it was listed as a case study by Harvard University. The College has been active in international teaching and research since.

Dean Muse concentrated many of his efforts toward meeting and exceeding the standards necessary to maintain an accredited standing for the undergraduate program and to accelerate work toward achieving accreditation for the graduate program. To meet such standards the dean encouraged further faculty activity toward research and publication. At a faculty meeting where some questioned the wisdom of a "publish or perish" kind of college, Dean Muse countered by saying, "it is not publish or perish, it is publish and prosper." This was a reversal of the earlier statement by Dean Lucas regarding faculty involvement in research and publication.

In late 1979, while on leave, Dean Muse tendered his resignation as the dean of CBA. He had accepted a position at a southwestern university. However, he had previously recruited Larry R. Trussell to be his Associate Dean. At the time of Dean Muse's resignation, Dr. Del Weber, the University Chancellor, encouraged the dean's CBA search committee to seek a person for the position who would be strong in developing external relationships for the college. The committee insisted that Dr. Trussell become dean of the college.
