CBA Internship Program
What is an internship?
An internship is an opportunity for undergraduate students to work and gain business experience in your major field. Most internships are paid and may be anywhere from 10-40 hours per week. An internship should give you an opportunity to put into practice in the real world the skills you've been developing in the classroom.
Who do I see for an internship?
Dr. Holland is the internship coordinator for Marketing, Management, and Finance majors. Accounting majors should see Professor Ilcisin, Econ majors should see Professor West and real estate majors should see Dr. Roger Sindt. Students whose majors are outside of CBA but have an emphasis, minor, or specialization in business may also apply for an internship with a letter of approval from their advisor.
Can I get credit?
Internships can either be for credit or just for experience, depending on the student's needs. You may do one internship for 1-3 credits in your major area. Additional internships can be used to gain more business experience and career networking opportunities. Credit can be granted in Fall, Spring, or Summer sessions. You must get Dr. Holland's approval before you can register for internship credit. Internship credit is billed the same as the rest of your tuition.
Can I use my current job for an internship?
It is possible. However, you must first provide Dr. Holland with a written outline of your proposed internship duties, the number of hours per week you will be working, and your supervisor's name, address, and telephone number. You should then schedule an appointment with Dr. Holland to get the internship approved.
How do I find an internship?
Dr. Holland has listings of current internships on the CBA web page. Go to cba.unomaha.edu and click on internships. Print the ones you are interested in, and schedule an individual interview with Dr. Holland to discuss them. New internships are available throughout the year, so if you do not see anything that interests you, check back periodically.
You may also search for your own internship through personal contacts, sending out letters of enquiry, or through a web or other job search process. If you find an opportunity on your own, you must get a written description and schedule an appointment for Dr. Holland for approval.
How do I apply?
The internship application is on-line. Go to cba.unomaha.edu and look under internships. Fill out the application. You should complete this before scheduling an individual interview.
When should I do the internship?
Students should consider an internship beginning in their junior year. Individual interviews and selection interviews are generally scheduled beginning August 1 for Fall internships, Nov. 1 for Spring, and March 15 for Summer.
What is an individual interview?
The individual interview is the process Dr. Holland uses to match internship candidates with sponsoring companies. You should call 554-3986 for an appointment after you have completed the on-line application, and have either printed out those opportunities listed on the web page that interest you, or have a written description of the internship you are proposing. You should come on time, dressed professionally, with your resume, prepared to discuss the internship opportunities in which you are interested.
How do I register?
You should not register for internship credit until you have accepted a position that has been approved. Once you have accepted the internship, you should inform Dr. Holland. She will authorize you to enroll, and then you should register through BRUNO if it is during the regular registration period, or Dr. Holland will sign an add slip for you.
How long do internships last?
Internships generally last a minimum of 3 months. You must complete 180 hours in the job to receive 3 credit hours. Many companies prefer that the interns stay on longer to work part time after the internship concludes. Other companies are looking for graduating seniors and may offer full-time employment at the conclusion of the internship. Any arrangement after the completion of the 3 months is strictly between the student and the sponsoring company.
What forms do I need?
The application form is on-line at cba.unomaha.edu. You should complete that first. When you accept an internship, you will need the forms in the internship packet available in CBA 304. The green Internship Agreement form should be completed as soon as you meet with your supervisor to discuss your responsibilities. Bring it in to Dr. Holland before you register. She will authorize you to enroll, and then you can register for the credit. The yellow sheet in this packet is the outline for your paper. The 10 page paper will constitute 45% of your grade. The blue sheet is the evaluation your supervisor will complete. This copy is for your reference. We will mail out a form to your supervisor at the end of the semester.
