UNO's business college to get bigger building

The University of Nebraska at Omaha broke ground Monday for a new, $31 million College of Business Administration building with roomier classrooms, larger laboratories and meeting space for students.

Business students at the University of Nebraska at Omaha will get a bigger building in two years. The new building, which will move business students to the south campus on Pacific Street, is needed because enrollment is expected to increase and the college's current location, at Roskens Hall, is cramped, UNO officials said.

"We want this to be a place where students will come in the morning and stay all day because it's a good environment for learning," said Louis Pol, dean of the business college.

The three-story building on UNO's south campus will be 120,000 square feet. Scheduled to open in August 2010, it will house all business programs and feature laboratories where students can study real estate, statistics and the stock market.

The fundraising goal for the project is $38.5 million, with officials hoping to designate $7.5 million for the college's endowment. Private donations will fund construction.

The building will be known as Mammel Hall, named for Carl and Joyce Mammel of Omaha, two University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduates who made the largest donation for the project.

UNO officials declined to say how much the Mammels contributed, although they called it the largest single donation in UNO history. A second Omaha couple, Ruth and Bill Scott, also made a major contribution.

With the space in Mammel Hall, the business college will be able to host events with Omaha-area business leaders and revamp its international business program.

Pol said the building also will provide more space to study and room to socialize.

"Students don't have any places to gather or places to study," he said of Roskens Hall on the main UNO campus. "So most of them come into the building, take their courses and get out of the building as quick as possible."

Once the business college is out of Roskens, UNO's College of Education will move in.

The new building will accommodate a projected 10 percent to 15 percent enrollment growth in the business college in coming years, Pol said. Current enrollment is 2,043 undergraduates and 370 graduate students.

The Mammels created a business student scholarship in 1998 called the Mammel Student and Faculty Excellence Fund. The fund provides student scholarships and money for faculty internships at local companies.

Carl Mammel founded employee benefits firm Mammel, Schropp, Swartzbaugh, Engler and Jones in 1959. The company has merged and become Silverstone Holdings Inc.

Joyce Mammel serves on the advisory board for Camp Fire USA, a not-for-profit youth development organization with headquarters in Kansas City, Mo.
